For Xbox gamers who suffer from vision problems or have difficulty reading, the Xbox One Narrator is an excellent option. Once activated, it automatically reads almost all menu items, but it can be a little tedious. It’s also possible that other gamers in your home will want to use the console without the speaker, so you’ll need to know how to turn it off quickly.
However, in this article we will discuss how to disable/enable the narrator feature. Many Xbox One users find it difficult to disable this feature. For some people the speaker will turn on automatically when they log in to their Xbox Live account. For others, it turns on automatically when they watch a movie in the Movies app. This can be very annoying for ordinary users, because the voice starts to tell you everything that happens on the screen. So, let’s look at some of the possible bug fixes that can help you turn this feature off.
Turn Off Narrator using the Controller
- Hold the Xbox button on the controller until it starts to vibrate and a pop-up menu pops up asking, “What do you want to do?
- At the bottom right corner you will see three bars next to the “Storyteller”. Press the “Menu” button on the controller again to open these settings.
- Use the toggle switch on the controller to select “No”. This will automatically disable the storyteller function and your console will stop reading text and other elements aloud.
You can enable the storyteller function at any time from the same menu.

Turn off the narrator function in the “Power” menu.
The easiest way to turn off the narrator is through the Xbox One Power menu. The disadvantage is that this method is also the main reason why people accidentally turn on the function without knowing it.
Here is how to turn off the Xbox One speaker with the Power menu:
- Turn on Xbox One and make sure that the speaker is on.
- When the speaker is on, the selected items are surrounded by a light blue frame and you can hear the voice of the text in your speech when you make a new selection.
- Press and hold the Xbox button on the control box until it starts to vibrate and the power menu opens.
- Press the Menu button (three horizontal lines) to turn the speaker off.
- Go back to the main screen and make sure that the speaker is turned off.
Disable Narrator using Voice Commands
If you have Cortana enabled on Xbox One – go to System Settings and select “Cortana” to enable it – you can disable the speaker without even pressing the button. Just say “Hey, Kortana, turn off the Speaker” and your system will turn it off automatically. You don’t need to use a Microsoft headset to do that – we even tried it with a PlayStation Gold headset.
If you have Kinect plugged in and Cortana is not on, you also need to have “Xbox, turn off the storyteller”. But you can’t use the headset without the Cortana – you need a PDA. Despite the fact that Kinect has been discontinued, you can still find it in third-party stores. Unfortunately, to use the Xbox One S or Xbox One X with Kinect you need a discontinued adapter and they are currently sold for over $200.
The Microsoft support site is currently pointing out that there should also be an option to activate Narrator with Cortana, but we have not been able to make this feature work on Xbox One. Since the supported voice commands vary from region to region, this command can work in your region.
