Many users have observed the “WINRE_DRV” when trying to install a new copy of Windows and have questioned the purpose and necessity of the partition. In this article, we will discuss the characteristics of the drive and also inform you if it is safe to delete the partition completely.
What is the “WINRE_DRV” partition?
Some of them are created by the manufacturer, such as the OEM partition and the recovery partition, others are created by Windows Setup, such as the EFI partition and the system partition. As for the Microsoft reserved partition, it must be created when writing disk partitioning information to the drive for the first time. When the manufacturer partitions the disk, the manufacturer creates it. If Windows partitions the hard disk during installation, Windows creates it.
Is it safe to delete the recovery partition?
There are essentially two types of recovery partitions, Windows recovery partitions and computer vendor recovery partitions. The Windows recovery partition allows you to boot into the Windows recovery environment (WinRE) to restore your computer in case of a problem, while the recovery partitions created by the manufacturer allow you to press a specific key (usually F9 for HP and F12 for Dell) to restore your computer’s factory settings.

If you see a few gigabytes of recovery partition in Disk Management, it is certainly included by computer manufacturers like Dell, HP and Lenovo. This recovery partition contains an image of everything that is pre-installed with the operating system. On some computers, this is an OEM-only partition. You can also see a recovery partition with several gigabytes of disk space and an OEM partition with less than 100 MB.
The Windows Recovery partition uses much less disk space. For example, the recovery partition of Windows 10 requires only about 450 MB, and even less under Windows 8 or 7, so it is recommended to keep the Windows recovery partition. However, if you really need to get rid of the recovery partition, you can create a Windows 10 recovery diskette with a USB key, then Windows 10 will give you the ability to delete the current Windows 10 recovery partition.
To delete the Windows recovery partition
Normally, the steps to delete a partition are as follows:
- Right-click on the Start button.
- Click on Disk Management.
- Right-click on the partition you want to delete,
- Select Delete Volume.
- Select Yes if you are notified that all data will be deleted.
Unfortunately, this does not work for Windows recovery partitions. Windows recovery partitions are protected, so right-clicking on them has no effect.
To delete the recovery partition, do the following:
- Right-click on the Start button.
- Click on Command prompt (Admin).
- Type of the disc part.
- Type the list reader.
- A list of hard disks is displayed. Note the number of the hard disk on which the partition you want to delete is located. (If in doubt, open Disk Management and search there, see steps above).
- Select the drive n (replace n with the drive number of the partition you want to delete).
- Enter the list partition.
- A list of partitions will appear and, hopefully, you should see one named Recovery of the same size as the one you want to delete.
- Select the partition n (replace n with the partition you want to delete).
- Type delete partition override.
- The recovery partition is now deleted.
