In Windows 7, you start the Task Manager. Select explore.exe from the processes and click the Finish Process button (16).

That would kill explore.exe.

Then click the tab File, select New Task (Run…), type explore.exe in the field and click OK.

This restarts explorer.exe.

Windows 10/8 provides the context menu option Restart Explorer in its task manager.

Alternatively, if you find that your explorer.exe freezes frequently or if you really experiment and test customizations, creating a shortcut desktop to restart explorer would definitely be a more practical option !

To do this, copy the following to a notepad and save it as (All files) as .bat file. Name it RestartExplorer.bat if you want!

@echo de taskkill /f /im explorer.exe start explorer.exe explorer.exe

That’s it !

Right-clicking Restart Explorer adds the Restart Explorer option to the context menu – you can try it!
