If your tab key no longer works, don’t worry. You are not alone. This is a common keyboard problem that you can solve quickly and easily.

The Tab key usually does not work because the keyboard driver is corrupted or the hardware problem is present. So you can try the following solutions to fix the tab key that does not work.

Sometimes the Tab key stops working due to water droplets, so make sure the hardware key works correctly.

The Tab key is one of the few keys that can be operated very easily. You can simply press Ctrl+I (hold down the Ctrl key and press the letter “I”).

And with the Alt(keypad)009 already mentioned, you don’t need to enter two leading zeros, only one is enough, like Alt(keypad)09.

You must have at least one entry zero (keyboard), otherwise special characters for special characters are entered.

Checking for damage

It is possible that the keyboard you are using may be damaged. Therefore, in this step, we will check if the problem is related to the software or hardware. For that:

  1. Simultaneously press the “Windows” + “S” keys to start the search.
  2. Type “Notepad” and select the first option.
  3. Click on the empty field to touch.
  4. Hold down “ALT” and press the “0,0,9” keys on the numeric keypad.
  5. If the pointer jumps a little space on the notebook, it means that the TAB function works and that the problem is hardware related.
  6. However, if the pointer does not skip any space, the problem must be related to the software.

Uninstalling the keyboard driver

  • The other thing you can try if nothing works above is to uninstall the keyboard driver and then reinstall it. You can do this by going to the Device Manager, expanding the keyboard and right-clicking to uninstall it.
  • Restart your computer immediately and let Windows reinstall the keyboard.

Physical repair of keyboard

If you have an old school keyboard that can be removed (screws on the back), simply disassemble it and clean it with alcohol. It is possible that the key is broken underneath and cannot be repaired, in this case take another key from a broken board, if present, and click it in place.

When you open the keyboard, make sure you keep an eye on the screws and have cleaning alcohol, cotton buds and a soft cloth at your disposal, you will need them all!

Restart Windows Explorer

If the Alt tab does not work on your Windows 10 PC, you may be able to solve the problem by simply restarting Windows Explorer. It’s quite simple, and you can do it by following these steps:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.
  • Now locate the Windows Explorer process, right-click it and choose Restart from the menu.

After that, your Windows Explorer should restart and the shortcut to the Alt tab will work again. Remember that this can only be a temporary solution, so you will have to repeat it if the problem occurs again.

Let’s hope one of the above methods has solved your problem. If not, write a comment here and we will try to help you. Have a good time!
