With Microsoft Store, users can install applications and games on up to 10 devices simultaneously. If you try to exceed this limit, Microsoft will block the installation of additional applications on the device. In this case, you must revoke the Microsoft Store license for one of your devices. This article shows you how to revoke Microsoft Store App licenses on a device.

Let’s first look at why the licensing model is necessary. Licensing is supposed to give customers control over their applications and keep them connected to these applications on the multiple PCs they use over time. It also offers developers integrated protection against occasional piracy, so they can safely create a company that develops applications for Windows 10 PCs.

This brings to our attention a question – why does the store ask you to register to buy free applications? The store’s license service registers a license for your Microsoft account for each application purchased. So he remembers the applications you bought. This information is then used to allow you to quickly buy these applications on another PC. It also stores a copy of this license on your PC, so that Windows knows that you are allowed to use the application on that PC, receive updates from the application and write reviews for it.

Windows Store Device Limit

Depending on the content or service, Microsoft has different licensing rules and there are four distinct lists that you must control:

  • Applications and games: For applications and games that you download for free or buy in stores, you are limited to 10 devices, which is well below the limit of 81 devices in Windows 8.1.
  • Music: The musical rules are even more limited. If you have a Groove Music Pass (Xbox Music Pass), you are limited to only four devices. However, music purchased in the store may be authorized on up to five personal devices.
  • Movies and TV: As with music rules, you are limited to four video playback devices for TV shows and movies purchased in the store.
  • Books: This is a new list, and the limitations will not be clear until the functionality is available with the Windows 10 Creators Update update.

To remove a Windows 10 download device from your Store account

  1. Open your favorite web browser and go to the next page. Log in to your Microsoft account when prompted.
  2. Click the Delete link next to the device name for the item you want to delete from your account.
  3. In the following dialog box, select I am ready to remove this device.
  4. Click on the Delete button. You receive the message “This PC is no longer associated with your customer account.

You now have an unused license that allows you to start installing applications on your new device. If you try to use Windows Store applications on your licensed device, you will notice that they no longer work. Installing additional applications from the store will fail because your device no longer has the required license.

Although most people will probably not use 10 devices at a time, you may reach the limit if you replace older devices with newer ones. Restarting takes only a few moments – go to your Microsoft account and remove Store licenses from your redundant devices.
