When you start typing in the address bar of Microsoft Edge (or Omnibox), the browser displays suggestions (in a drop-down list) for searches and related web sites by sending the characters you type to the search engine used by the address bar.
The browser also displays suggestions for your favorite websites and browsing history in the address bar.
If you’re concerned about your privacy and want to disable suggestions from your favourites and history as well, here’s some good news for you.
Newer versions of Microsoft Edge have a hidden preference/flag that can be turned on to add a new option on the Microsoft Edge settings page that can be turned off to completely disable suggestions in the address bar.
How to Enable or Disable Search Suggestions in Microsoft Edge
Use these steps to disable search suggestions on Microsoft Edge on Windows 10:
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the Settings and More button in the upper right corner (three dots).
- Click Settings.
- Click Privacy and Services.
- In the Services section, click the Address Bar option.
- Delete the program search and site suggestions using my toggle keyboard.
Once these steps are complete, when you type characters in the address bar, stop sending information to the default search engine to display a list of search suggestions. However, you will still see the history and favorite suggestions.
Enable or Disable Search Suggestions in the Microsoft Edge Address Bar for the Current User
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click/press the Settings and more (Alt+X) button (3 dots) and click/press Settings.
- Click/press Privacy and Security on the left side and enable or disable (default setting) Search and suggest websites while I type what you want under Privacy on the right side.
Conclusion
From there you can also change the search engine in Edge browser. By default it is set to Bing, but you can change it to any other search engine, including Google or Duck Duck Go. For more information, see our article on changing the default search engine for Microsoft Edge.
That’s all there is to it. When you enter search queries in the address bar, you no longer see the list of suggestions for your default search engine. However, you will still see suggestions from your search history and favorites.
Remember that the new chrome-based Edge is cross-platform. It is available for Windows 7, 8, 10, MacOS, iOS and Android devices. If you haven’t used it yet, read our article on installing Microsoft Edge.
