When installing updates for their computers via Windows Update, many users reported a single update – a definition update for Windows Defender – as a failure, with error code 800106ba associated with the problem. Windows Defender definition updates contain new and updated definitions for all known viruses and malware. These updates are therefore absolutely essential to the optimal functioning of Windows Defender, and why not be able to install only one of these updates can be a fairly significant problem.
Other users also reported that not only did Windows Defender updates fail, but many other upcoming updates for Microsoft Office, Windows Live Essentials, Skype, Microsoft Silverlight, etc. also failed. Although this problem is common among Windows 10 users, it has also been reported on previous operating systems, including Windows Vista.
In most cases, the problem is due to the conflict with security software, for example Avast, Norton, Malwarebytes, etc. So if you get the error 0x800106ba, we strongly recommend that you stop or delete the third-party antivirus completely. However, if you are not using other antivirus or antimalware programs, the error may have been caused by a recently installed Windows Defender update, but the Windows Defender firewall remains obsolete. This can happen if the PC user does not have the required permissions for the update, or if some update files are missing or corrupted. Fortunately, there are some methods you can try to fix the Windows Defender 0x800106ba error.
To fix the update error in the Windows Defender definition 800106ba:
