How to open any application with its name in RUN dialog box on Windows

Opening the applications in Windows by typing its name in RUN dialog box is one method,  but we cannot open all the applications like this. Only built-in Windows applications can be opened like this, but for third party applications it is not possible. For this you need to set the path of that certain application in Windows Registry such that Windows will know about it when you search for the application through Runbox.

How to open any application with its name in RUN dialog box on Windows

  • Press Win+R keys to launch RUN dialog box and then type regedit in it and press enter.
  • Above action will open Registry Editor and here navigate to the following key.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionApp Paths

C:Program FilesMy ApplicationMy Application.exe

  • Now create a new key under App paths key. For this right-click on the App paths key and select New > Key and set its name to the desired app name along with the extensions. For example Adobe Reader.exe.
  • Select the key which you have created in the above step in the right side pane and replace the value of Default to full path of the app’s exe file. C:Program FilesAdobeAdobeReader.exe
  • Create a new string value Path in the right side pane and set its value to the folder containing the app’s EXE file.

That’s it, from now you can open your desired program by typing its name in RUN dialog box or search box . Follow the same process to open all the application from the RUN box or search box. This makes easy and quick to launch the particular application on your PC.
