If you have been working on Windows for some time, you must have seen some folders on root drives called Found like Found.000, Found.001 and so on. The message tells you which folders have been found and why they are created in the root directory from time to time.
What is Found.000?
The found.000 folders are a folder that is automatically created when you run a chkdsk on your PC or other hard disk scanning utility. If bad sectors are found on the hard disk when running chkdsk on the hard disk, if chkdsk tries to repair this sector, all available data may be lost. Therefore, this folder is created to store data lost during the chkdsk process. It is possible to delete this folder safely.
However, if you have missing files, do not delete this folder yet. You can find these files in this folder. If you do not have any missing files and want to delete this folder, you can do so. Delete the folder should put it in the Trash, and you can restore it from the Trash.
November 2024 Update:
You can now prevent PC problems by using this tool, such as protecting you against file loss and malware. Additionally, it is a great way to optimize your computer for maximum performance. The program fixes common errors that might occur on Windows systems with ease - no need for hours of troubleshooting when you have the perfect solution at your fingertips:
- Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (Windows 10, 8, 7, XP, Vista – Microsoft Gold Certified).
- Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
- Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.
Should it be deleted?
Since the folder is created by the “Chkdisk” function and has no obvious use, it is safe to delete the content or even the entire folder. There is no practical way to recover the data from the folder, the data stored in the folder is damaged/fragmented anyway, so there is no sense in trying to recover it at all.
How to delete the folder?
Because the folder is associated with a system process, the contents of the folder may not be as easy to delete from your computer. If the folder size is not too large, it is recommended to leave it as it is, but if you still want to delete the folder, follow the instructions below.
- Press “Windows” + “R” to open the Run command prompt.
- Type “Powershell” and simultaneously press “Shift” + “Ctrl” + “Enter” to open it as administrator.
- Type the following command and press Enter.
rmdir F:\found.000 /s /q
- Note: Replace “F” with the directory where the folder is located.
- Wait until the command is executed and the folder is deleted.
Can I restore files in the.000 folder found?
Typically, when Windows Scandisk or Chkdsk scans your hard disk for errors, it converts your data into.chk files that it thinks are corrupt, then collects these files in a found.000 folder. And if you try to open the CHK files, you will find that they are completely inaccessible. As a result, you will end up with a terrible disaster of data loss.
