Resource Monitor is a useful tool in Windows 10/8/7 that helps us determine how many resources are used over time through a graphical representation. In this way, we can examine the performance indicators for a particular resource and decide how we can improve performance. There are many ways to start the Resource Monitor and use the application to trace performance data.

Resource Monitor under Windows 10

Resource Monitor or Resmon you can easily monitor CPU usage, memory usage, disk activity, network activity and more. Like the reliability monitor or performance monitor, the resource monitor is a useful integrated tool in Windows.

To start Resource Monitor, type resmon in Start Search and press Enter. When you start the application for the first time, the’Overview’ tab is displayed.

As its name suggests, the Overview tab displays basic information about the system resource usage of the other four main tabs :

      • CPU
      • Memory
      • Disk
      • Network

You can view basic graphics for each of the four categories. It provides a basic overview of the current status of your system at a glance.

As you can see, the CPU graph shows the total percentage of CPU capacity currently used (green curves along the graph) with a blue color indicating the maximum CPU frequency. Next to it is a disk diagram showing the total current I/O in green and the highest active time in blue. Similar results are also displayed for the network graph and the memory graph. With Memory, the current hard defects per second are displayed in green and the percentage of physical memory in blue.

To learn more about a specific tab, simply select the appropriate tab.

Under the CPU tab, it is possible to filter each view of the specified tabs according to the process. Simply check the box for this process and only the activity for this process will appear in the lower window. If no process is selected, the lower windows are converted to an activity page for all active processes. The numerical scale of the right-hand diagrams changes as the activity changes. On the right side, you see consumption charts that help you monitor CPUs.

Memory tab

The’Memory’ tab displays the memory used by each of the current processes and the graphics on the right. This gives us a quick overview of physical memory usage. You can easily see all the physical memory and its active use as well as the hardware reservation. Hardware Reserved represents the physical memory addresses reserved by the hardware and not available for Windows.

Disc tab

Under the Disc tab, you will find the processes involved in a disc activity. At this point, you can find some processes that are engaged in many read-write activities. Right-clicking on a process allows you to end the process, end the entire process tree, and so on.

Network tab

The Network tab indicates which programs access the network and to which IP address it is connected. This helps limit the problem if you experience abnormally high network activity.

The Resource Monitor offers many advantages over previous individual tools such as System Monitor, Performance Logs and Alerts and Server Performance Advisor, so that it combines the functionality of these tools into a single interface. It also provides a much more detailed overview of system activity and resource consumption than previous tools such as the task manager.

See this message if the resource monitor does not work.
