How to use Perfmon or Performance Monitor on Windows 10/8/7

Introduced in Windows Vista, the Reliability and Performance Monitor is a good integrated tool that allows you to monitor and examine how applications that affect your computer’s performance are executed, both in real time and by collecting log data for later analysis. In this post, we will see how to use Performance Monitor or Perfmon, as it is called, in Windows 10/8. The same applies to Windows 7

Use Perfmon

Open the WinX menu in Windows 8 and select Run. Type .exe and press Enter to open the performance monitor. In the left pane, select the Custom node, right-click it, and select New > Data Collector Set.

Give it a name and select Create manually (Advanced) to set the parameters yourself.

Select the type of data to be recorded. Click Next

Click Add and select the performance counters you want to record. They can typically be memory, processor load, etc.

When the selection is complete, click OK.

Select the sampling interval and units and click Next.

Select the location where you want to save the data.

How would you like to accomplish the task? Leave as default – or use the Edit button to select another user. Click Finish.

You see the new entry in the right field. Right-click and choose Start.

When you are finished, right-click again and select Stop.

The data log file is created and stored at the specified location. Click the file to display it in the performance monitor.

You can now analyze the data from each of the meters.

While the task is running, you can change its properties at any time by right-clicking the data collector in the left pane and selecting Properties.

Some useful shortcuts to run Reliability Monitor and Standalone Performance Monitor that you can use with Run :

      • /rel : Runs Reliability Monitor
      • : Run a standalone performance monitor
