There are two versions of Internet Explorer 10 or IE11 in Windows 8, one with the Metro user interface, which is more locked, and the other, the traditional office version as we know it. The standard version under Windows 8 is the IE 10 Metro version.

When you are on the Windows 8 start screen and click on the IE tile, Internet Explorer 10 opens with the Metro interface. On this Metro version, you won’t find many features you’re used to! For example, some of the add-ons or plugins will not work. Java and Flash may not work either.

IE 10 offers new settings in its Internet options. To open the Internet options, click the Settings icon and select View on Desktop.

This opens Internet Explorer on your desktop. Now things look familiar! Now open Internet Options via the Settings button and click the Programs tab. Here you see some new options.

To always open Internet Explorer tiles on the desktop, select Open Internet Explorer tiles on the desktop.

Under the Choose how to open links section, when you see the drop-down menu, you will see three options.

The default setting is Let Internet Explorer decide how it opens links. In this case, IE can sometimes be opened with the Metro user interface and sometimes on the desktop, depending on the application or program accessing it.

If you want to set IE as your default browser and all your links must always be opened in Internet Explorer with the Metro user interface, select option Always in Internet Explorer.

If you want to open the IE on your familiar desktop, regardless of the program settings, select the third option Always in Internet Explorer on the desktop. This will make Internet Explorer 10 in Windows 8, always open the links on the desktop

Click Apply/OK.
