Well, it happened to me after I uninstalled a program. Internet Explorer 64-bit would open, but IE 32-bit would simply not open on my Windows 7 64-bit. When I clicked on the icons of these two icons, nothing happened, but when I clicked on the 64-bit IE icon, it came to life.

I may not have noticed it because I attached the 64-bit IE icon to my taskbar, but when I tried to click on my Twitter clients’ links, the default browser, Internet Explorer 32-bit, didn’t open. Also, no link was opened when I clicked it in my default email client, Windows Live Mail. I would understand the message:

No program is assigned to this file to perform this action. Please install a program or, if already installed, create a shortcut in the control panel for standard programs.

I navigated to the Control PanelAll items in the Control PanelDefault Programs and opened Define Default Programs. I noticed Internet Explorer is missing here!

If you are also experiencing this problem, you should try some of these troubleshooting steps.

1 Open Set program access and computer default values and set Internet Explorer as the default web browser.

Verify that the Internet Explorer entry is displayed in the Default Programs field. If so, click Set this program as default and select all default settings for IE. If this doesn’t work for you, try the following suggestion.

2 Run System File Checker. Reboot and after a reboot, check if IE 32-bit is open.

3 Save the affected dll and ocx files and see if it helps. You can use Fix IE or IE Restorator.

4 Perform system restore and restore a good previous point. You can try restoring the system to Safe Mode if Normal mode does not work properly.

5 Quickly save your IE favorites and other settings with FavBackup or MailBrowserBackup, then reset the Internet Explorer settings.

Uninstall then reinstall Internet Explorer. You must uncheck the box and click OK to do so.

I am sure one of these suggestions will help you. Once you have resolved the problem, you can confirm that IE is actually visible under Standard Programs and set Internet Explorer as the default and select all default settings for IE.

Let’s hope something helps you here!
