Screen resolution is a setting that determines how much detail and information is displayed on your computer screen and is measured horizontally and vertically in pixels.
Windows selects the best display settings, including screen resolution, refresh rate and color, based on your screen. These settings differ depending on whether you have an LCD or CRT monitor.
Although it is generally a good idea to set your computer’s screen resolution to its native resolution – the resolution a monitor should display because of its size, there may be a reason you want to change it. You can choose one of the recommended resolutions or simply let your eyes decide what suits you best.

Resolution based on CRT monitor size
Unlike LCD monitors, CRT monitors are generally not available in widescreen format. Almost all have a standard screen ratio of 4:3, with resolutions in the same aspect ratio. Here is the recommended resolution for the CRT monitor size
An LCD monitor operating at its native resolution normally displays text better than a CRT monitor. LCD monitors may support resolutions technically lower than their native resolution, but the text is not as sharp, and the image may appear small, centered on the screen, edged in black, or stretched.
Change screen resolution under Windows
If you want to change your screen resolution under Windows 7/8/10, right click on your desktop and select Screen resolution.
In the Control Panel Settings window that opens, use the drop-down menu to set the desired resolution. Learn more about how to adjust your monitor for better screen resolution.
If you are a Windows 10 user, also open Settings > System > System > Display. Click Advanced Display Settings to open the following windows.
Here you can set the screen resolution.
Set a different screen resolution for each user
With the Windows operating system, you cannot set the screen resolution per user. Once you have set a screen resolution from the Control Panel, the same setting applies to all users. You can also set your monitor to display an individual resolution for each user account. This means that each time a user logs in, they receive the screen resolutions they have set for their account.
Download and use Caroll. This free software automatically adjusts screen resolutions for each PC user.
At first start, the program displays all available screen resolutions. Select the one you want and click Change screen resolution and restore each time you connect. The next time you log in, Carroll will automatically change the screen resolution without displaying the user interface.
