Fixed a problem when the Win32_Environment WMI class was queried by several requesters on a computer running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. If this problem occurs, you will receive an error code “0x80041001 (WBEM_E_FAILED)”.

Error Code 0X80041001

When the Win32_Environment class is queried, the hive of each user hive is loaded under the HKEY_USERS registry key and the user-specific environment properties of the hive are read. A loaded registry hive can be unloaded by any user who has the required permissions, unless a user still has a key to a subkey of the open hive. In this situation, loading and unloading operations are protected by a critical section. However, the process of opening a key in the hive is not protected. Therefore, a hive loaded by one yarn can be unloaded by another yarn. In this situation, this problem arises.

The generic failure problem occurs during a remote request because the profile of the user making the request cannot be successfully analyzed on the remote system. Some installation packages are defined by default per user, others do not require it. If your user account has been logged in during one of these installations, then try to remotely query for Win32_Product, you will probably get the “Generic Failure” error. This is more often the case in some environments than in others, especially if the person who manages the workstations is the same person who provided or created the “image” of the workstation to them, as their profile more likely contains installation entries “per user”.

The solution to this problem for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 systems is to run the request as a user account that has never installed software on the workstations before. For example, create a user account that is used specifically for software inventory or other administrative activities, and then use this account to execute queries. NEVER use this account to install software on the systems to be monitored.
