How to remotely shut down Windows 10/8/7 computers

This article shows you how to remotely shutdown or restart a Windows 10/8/7 PC from the Remote Shutdown dialog box or command line. With the Remote Shutdown Dialog and Shutdown Options available in Windows, you can easily shutdown, reboot or disconnect local or network computers remotely.

To open the Remote Stop dialog box, open a command prompt, type shutdown -i and press Enter.

The ‘Remote Stop’ dialog box opens.

In the window that opens, click Add. This allows you to add the name of the computer you want to keep off. You can find the name of the PC by right-clicking on Computer and selecting Properties. As an example, I used his-pc and her-pc. You can also use the Browse button to search for other PCs on your network.

Then select the command. I chose Shutdown and left 60 seconds before the stop started. You can also enter a message to display before stopping.

Note that :

  • To send commands to other PCs, you must also have administrator rights on these computers.
  • In order for stop event tracking to record information, the remote recording service must be enabled on the remote computer.
  • Remote management and Windows Management Instrumentation Firewall exceptions must be enabled on the remote computer.
