1. Preparation

  • Back up your data
    • Use an external hard drive, USB thumb drive, SD card, or a cloud service like OneDrive for backing up files.
    • Ensure that all valuable data, including documents, photos, and videos, are securely backed up.
    • Consider using a backup software for a more comprehensive and automated backup process.
  • Check disk space
    • Ensure there is sufficient free space on your hard drive for reinstallation.
    • Use disk cleanup tools or manually delete unnecessary files to free up space.
    • Check for large files or folders that can be moved or deleted, such as old system restore points or temporary files.
  • Activation
    • Verify that your current Windows 10 installation is activated.
    • Reactivation typically occurs automatically once online, after the reinstallation.
    • Know your product key or digital license information in case manual activation is needed.
  • Digital License
    • For Windows 10 (version 1607 or later), link your Microsoft account to the Windows 10 digital license.
    • This step is crucial for reactivating Windows 10 after the reinstallation.
    • Check your activation status in Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

2. Reinstallation Options

  • Reset Windows 10
    • Access this option through Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
    • Choose to keep your files or remove everything.
    • This option resets Windows settings to default and removes installed apps.
  • Reinstall Using Installation Media
    • Requires an external storage device like a USB drive with at least 8GB of space.
    • Provides options to keep personal files and apps, only personal files, or remove everything.
    • Suitable for more thorough cleaning of the system.
  • Clean Install
    • Recommended for advanced users familiar with system changes.
    • Completely wipes the disk and installs a fresh copy of Windows 10.
    • Removes all personal files, apps, drivers, and changes made in settings.

3. Creating Installation Media

  • Visit the Microsoft software download website to get the Windows 10 installation media.
  • Open the downloaded tool and accept the license terms.
  • Choose ‘Create installation media’ option.
    • Select the desired language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit).
    • Choose the media type, with USB flash drive being the recommended option.

    • In such cases, use the Activation troubleshooter to reactivate Windows.
  • Edition Matching
    • Ensure the edition of Windows 10 you reinstall matches your digital license (e.g., Windows 10 Home).
  • Reserved Storage
