If you are using Windows 8.1 / 8, you should know that the number of lines for tiles on the starting screen depends entirely on the screen resolution or window size that corresponds to your default Windows screen. But sometimes you may want to display a number of tile lines on the home screen, which does not depend on the size of the screen. And there’s no direct way to change that number of rows of tiles.
In one of our previous messages, we saw how to change this with the registry editor. This article shows how to change the number of application tiles on the Windows 8 startup screen using PowerShell Script and VBScript. You don’t need to know the programming – these finished scripts are provided in the TechNet Script Center Gallery. All you have to do is execute the script. We will see both methods, one now and the other in our next post. My PC comes standard with 5 rows of application tiles. What I will do is change it to 3 with Power Shell Script and 5 again with VBS in the next post.
Use the PowerShell script to change the number of App Tile lines
November 2024 Update:
You can now prevent PC problems by using this tool, such as protecting you against file loss and malware. Additionally, it is a great way to optimize your computer for maximum performance. The program fixes common errors that might occur on Windows systems with ease - no need for hours of troubleshooting when you have the perfect solution at your fingertips:
- Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (Windows 10, 8, 7, XP, Vista – Microsoft Gold Certified).
- Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
- Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.
So first go to the TechNet Script Center gallery to download the Microsoft PowerShell zip file. Now that you have downloaded the script file, extract its contents.
As I said, we will now use PowerShell Script. Just decompress all the contents of ChangeNumberOfAppsTileRows (PowerShell).zip. The content is extracted to a folder. The folder has the script module ChangeNumberOfAppsTileRows.psm1, we must do it in the PowerShell console.
Start Windows PowerShell now as administrator. (If you have not attached PowerShell to the taskbar, simply follow this example. On the start screen, simply type PowerShell and the Windows PowerShell application appears. Simply right-click and from the lower application bar to Pin to the taskbar, now you have the Windows Power Shell icon in the taskbar)
Now that we have opened the PowerShell console. To run the script in the Windows PowerShell console, type the command :
This command changes the number of rows of tiles on the start screen.
When the script is finished, the message is displayed in the console as successful. And then you will be promoted to disconnect in the console. Enter Y and it becomes a signout. And when you confirm, the number of tile lines is changed to 3.
Simple, right? So you use the PowerShell script to change the number of App Tile lines on the start screen.
In our next post, we will see how to use VBScript to change the Windows 8 start screen.
