While some see blank or broken tiles for some Windows Store applications after upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, many others see a down arrow in the lower right corner of their Windows Store application on their home screen.

Many users who upgraded their Windows 8 system to Windows 8.1 noticed a small downward arrow on their tile. While some have seen it for some tiles, others have seen it for most of their tiles. Many users have reported this problem to Answers. People thought that maybe it was their security software that made these arrows appear, but disabling Avast etc. didn’t help, so this reason was excluded.

In my opinion, these arrows could indicate that downloads were available for these applications and that they were automatically downloaded and updated, or that they were still in the download or update queue.

The puzzle gets deeper, because in some cases such applications are not even updated manually ! When some users manually updated the applications by clicking on these tiles, nothing happened. Moreover, these tiles are no longer’alive’!

If you also see these arrows on the tiles of your application, here are some possible solutions you might want to try:

  1. Make sure your Microsoft account is properly configured and that your PC is connected to the Windows store. This is important!
  2. Wait a day and see if they disappear.
  3. Try updating them manually. Who knows, you might get lucky!
  4. Temporarily disable your security software and try to update it.
  5. Perform integrated network troubleshooting
  6. Perform troubleshooting for Microsoft accounts
  7. Perform application troubleshooting.
  8. Reset the Windows store cache.
  9. Uninstall and reinstall. This is not an attractive solution if you have too many tiles with arrows – but it should certainly help!
