Although I love using Windows Live Mail on my Windows 7, I never liked updating it. For a long time I stopped updating Windows Live Mail 2011 to the latest version for the simple reason that every time I did it and restarted, I couldn’t reply or send new emails and I got the error – Failure to initialize the canvas. I never really found a solution to this error!
I tried to update WLM several times, I had the same error, then the system was restored to get the previous version. Once again, I decided to risk the update process by updating Windows Live Mail Version 2011 to build 15.4.3555.0308 a few days ago.
I had the same problem when I restarted my computer, started Windows Live Mail and tried to send a new mail!
The canvas initialization failed

So I decided to repair WLM. It didn’t work out. A new installation seemed to be the only possibility. I exported my emails and settings, uninstalled WLM reinstalled WLM and re-imported my emails and settings. I could send new e-mails now!
Things looked good – until I was restarted and got the message :
Please wait while Windows Live Mail configured
Every time I restarted my Windows, I got this message – and it was pretty irritating to wait one or two minutes.
So I looked around the Internet and found that there was not much confirmed and functional help for this particular problem – although it seems to be a common problem. Then I found information that led me in that direction. The problem seemed to be in permissions for the following registry key :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesWLMail.Url.Url.Mailto
So I left Windows Live Mail, opened the Windows registry and navigated to this key. I tried to open it and change its permissions. But was unable and received the following messages:
I could not save the changes.
So I downloaded our mobile freeware RegOwnIt, which allows you to quickly and easily take control of registry keys.
I inserted the path of the registration key and clicked Apply. The new owner has been determined.
Now you must make sure that permissions for the key WLMail.Url.Url.Mailto are as follows :
Right-click > Permissions > Set as follows > Click Apply/OK – and you will also see new settings in the registry.
That’s it!
Now that I have started my Windows Live Messenger – and viola – is no longer Please wait … ; Message ! The problem’s been solved!
I hope this simple solution to a rather frustrating problem that has worked for me will help you too. If you need help, you can always visit our Windows Help Forum.
