During the issue, we discovered that the missing account was listed under the user directory. We could not rename the entry because the Rename option is grayed out. So when we tried to create a new user account with the same name, Windows obviously did not allow us to do so.

How to solve this problem? Well, in this article, we’ll tell you how you can fix this problem. After doing some research, we discovered that the user we missed is still available in Windows, but he lost group membership, i.e. there is no group to which this user belongs, so he is not available to you. 1 Press Windows + R combination, type sysdm.cpl into Run and press Enter to open System Properties.

2 In the System Properties window , go to the Advanced tab under User Profiles to Settings.

3 You can now view all user accounts on your system. The Unknown account is here the user account that does not belong to any group.

So if we add this user to a group in any way, we can restore him as our local user account. Here are the steps to follow to place the missing user account in a group:

1 Open the administrative command prompt (16).

2 Insert the following command and press Enter :

net localgroup Administrators[Computer name][Missing user] /add

In the above command, you must replace[Computer name] with your computer name and [Missing user] with the local account name you lost after the upgrade. After a restart, you can use the Recover user account option, which was missing after the upgrade.

Hope this helps!
