Under Windows 10, we can run many applications from the command prompt with their aliases. The default alias for opening Notepad from the command prompt is notepad.exe. Simply enter it and press Enter to open the Notepad application.

The aliases of requests are generally similar in the name of the original request, but sometimes two different requests may have the same alias, which may lead to a conflict of interest. In such a situation, an attempt to open the intended application from the command prompt by entering its alias may open the others. For example, we have 2 applications called Spot Music, which could have the same name but were designed by two different brands and have a different size and structure. The default run name for both programs could be spotmusic.exe, since both are program files. When you try to open one of them, the other application opens. It’s boring and it limits our work.

Previous Windows users can change the alias of either application according to the instructions on docs.microsoft.com, but with starting Windows 10 1803, users can specify which application should use a particular alias if more than one application has the same name.

How to select the application that could use a specific alias

If you have more than one application with the same alias, the following steps can help you select the application that should use the original name:

1] Click the Start button, then click the speed icon to open the Settings window.

2] Select Apps Apps then the Apps and Features tab on the left.

3] Click the link Manage Run Alias link . The list of applications that may have conflicting aliases is displayed.

(4) Deactivate the shift key for applications with the same name.

When you open applications using alias names with their run names from the command prompt, only applications with switches enabled are opened.

The switch is designed for applications with conflicting design names. If we disable toggle for applications that do not have such a conflict, we get a prompt error when we try to open applications from the command prompt:

  • It is not recognized as an internal or external command, executable program or batch file

However, this would not prevent users from starting the application from the Start menu or otherwise.
