To set up a VPN on your router, go to your computer and let us find the IP address first. As you can see, I’m in India right now, so I won’t have access to HBO NOW or Pandora.
Then connect to your router using the router’s IP address – usually 192.168.1.1 or 0.1. If you are not sure which IP address you have, you can always send a ping to your router.
If you are not using DD-WRT yet, you must flash it on your router. If you have already done so, you can go to the next step.
We now have a detailed video on setting up a VPN on a router, which you can watch from the YouTube card, but I’ll give you a brief overview. Before installing the VPN, you need to make sure that certain things are in order. For example, change your DNS from ISP to Google, disable IPv6, and also disable the firewall. This way you can make sure that your VPN is working properly.
Then go to “Services” and select “VPN”. Set “Start OpenVPN Client” to “Enable”.
Remember that the open VPN is just a container to access VPN servers. You must always purchase a VPN from a VPN service.
Enter the VPN server address to the name/IP of your VPN provider’s server, in this case I enter the details for Smart DNS Proxy. You can get all this information from your VPN provider, which usually has a page like this one where you can find out the server address. Then, enter your VPN username and password.
Save the changes and restart your router via “Administration” and restart your router.
After rebooting, it should connect to the VPN automatically. Please wait up to 1 minute until the OpenVPN connection is established. You can check the status of the connection by going to “Status” and an “OpenVPN” tab. You should see “Client”. RELATED SUCCESS”.
