With Windows 10, you can quickly find other computers on a network. A network is simply a group of connected PCs that can share things like your Internet connection, files, or a printer. Most people use a public network every day without knowing it: Every time you check your email, your PC connects to another PC on the Internet to check your pending messages.
Most of the time, you don’t have to worry about other PCs on your private network. But if you want to find a connected PC, perhaps to retrieve files from your living room PC, Windows can help.
Computers connected to the same LAN and in the same workgroup or home group can see and communicate with each other. But if a PC is connected to another workgroup, the computer is not visible to other workstations, even if it is on the same network. To find out which computers are on the local network, log on to the router to see all connected devices and their associated IP addresses. You can use this information to connect to computers in another workgroup.
How to Find Other Computers on a Network in Windows 10
- To find a PC in your home group or traditional network, open any folder and click on the word “Network” in the navigation pane on the left of the folder.
- If you click Network, all PCs connected to your own PC on a traditional network are listed.
- If you click Home Network in the navigation pane, the Windows PCs in your home group are listed, which is an easier way to share files.
- To browse the files on these PCs in either category, simply double-click their names.
Once you have completed the steps, you are ready to access the device. However, you can only access the shared resources if the remote device has the same account and password. If it does not, you must authenticate with the user name and password of an administrator account that is available on the remote device to access it.
