Large Windows 10 updates are not always smooth. And if you own Microsoft Surface Book 2, you’ll probably be a little upset to learn that you can’t upgrade to Windows 10 version 1903, the latest version of Microsoft’s operating system, because of a bug in Nvidia GPUs.
To be fair, such errors will occur when a company pushes updates for an operating system installed on PCs with very different hardware configurations and capabilities. Microsoft is usually fast with patches to fix some of these problems, but sometimes you need an immediate solution when you pull the trigger and damage your system.
If an update does not go as planned, cancel it. You can do this in Windows or, in difficult circumstances, reset an update from Safe Mode or when using the Windows backup environment.

To undo or uninstall a problematic Windows update
We do not go back from our opinion that it is better to keep Windows updated automatically, and it is still very unlikely that you will be affected by another bad update, but since lightning strikes twice sometimes, it is better to know how to recover in case of a problem.
If you are within this 10-day period, you can follow these instructions to reset your installation, which should solve your problem:
- Open the Settings application (shortcut: Win+I).
- Click on Update and Security, then on Recovery.
- Click on the “Start” button under the heading “Back to previous version of Windows 10”.
- Follow the instructions

Disable Windows Update completely
Once you have restored a secure version of Windows or uninstalled problematic Windows updates, you should prevent Windows from downloading and reinstalling itself automatically. As long as you are using the April 2019 version of Windows or later, you can do so in the home version of the operating system. (This function is automatically integrated into Windows 10 Pro.)
To disable the Windows Update service in the Service Manager, do the following:
- Press Windows + R. Type services.msc, then press Enter.
- Check for a Windows update.
- Right-click on Windows Update and select Properties.
- In the General tab, set the start type to Disabled.
- Click on Stop.
- Click Apply, then click OK.
- Restart your computer.
