“Wow.dll” is a virus file that is responsible for executing the parasite’s destructive payload on your device. It implements itself as a Windows plugin, which may prevent it from appearing in antivirus scans and require manual deletion. However, some third-party antivirus software may detect it as a virus and delete or modify it automatically.
The common cause is that it is malware that has been removed from your antivirus, but still appears in the list of programs that Windows starts at startup.
The error message indicates the following path:
C:\users\laptop\appdata\local\temp\scfymve\scsqxdx\wow.dll
To correct WOW.DLL has stopped working error
- Get a copy of the WOW64.DLL DLL under C:\Windows\System32 from another Windows 7 PC (I used a friend’s PC). Copy it to a USB stick.
- Restart your PC in safe mode (press F8 during startup).
- Navigate to C:\Windows\System32, right-click on Wow64.dll and select Properties.
- In the Wow64.dll Properties window, go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
- Go to the Owners tab and change the owner to Administrators (the current owner would normally be TrustedInstaller). You can also do this from a high prompt:
- In the high prompt, navigate to C:\Windows\System32.
- Type the following command:
TAKEOWN /F WOW64.DLL
- You should receive a confirmation message that says “SUCCESS: The file (or folder): “File name” now belongs to the user “Computer name\user name”.
- If successful, type the following command:
ICACLS WOW64.DLL /grant administrators:F
- Delete or move your current Wow64.dll file to another folder.
- Copy the external copy of Wow64.dll (from step 1 above) into the C:\Windows\System32 folder on your system.
- Restart your PC normally.
