Whether for personal, business or commercial use, Skype is one of the best visual communication software on mobile phones and PCs. And a video call is impossible without a working camera. If you can’t make Skype video calls because your webcam isn’t working or Skype doesn’t recognise the camera on your Windows PC, we’ve listed several ways to solve the problem below.

Skype video calls may not work if the application can’t access your device’s camera. Sometimes this may be due to complications with your PC’s webcam driver. Running an outdated or unsupported version of Windows may also cause the Skype camera (or other function of the application) to malfunction. In any case, at least one of the following fixes should restore your Skype Camera to normal.

Here are some other things that may affect the quality of your call:

  • Make sure you have a strong WiFi signal or use a wired connection if possible.
  • If your internet connection goes down during a call, Skype may disable one or more video streams during group calls. Once the internet connection is restored, Skype will automatically turn video back on.
  • If you are having connection problems in Windows, you can follow the troubleshooting steps in the Why I can’t go online section.
  • Close any applications that may be interfering with your call. File sharing applications, streaming audio or video, or even an open browser can all take up bandwidth.
  • If you’re using Skype on a laptop and you’re in power-saving mode, try plugging in the laptop or putting it in maximum performance mode.

Uncover your webcam

If you are having trouble seeing an image of your webcam on Skype, check that the cover has been removed or is not hidden by paper or tape. You should be able to see the webcam’s glass lens when it is properly exposed.

Launch the DirectX diagnostic tool

First of all, make sure your version of DirectX is at least 9.0 – otherwise Skype video calls won’t work.

Then run the DirectX diagnostic tool to solve the mystery of your webcam:

  • Windows logo key + R -> type dxdiag.exe in the Run -> OK field.
  • Wait until the diagnosis is complete
  • Saving the results in a text file

Update of the webcam driver

Updating the webcam driver to the latest version may solve problems related to video calls. Follow the steps below to update the webcam driver.

  • Open the Control Panel and click Device Manager. In the Device Manager window, click and expand the imaging devices.
  • Select your webcam from the list and right-click the webcam device.
  • In the drop-down menu, click Update Driver.
