In early 2018, HP issued a battery recall after it was determined that some of its laptop batteries could overheat and catch fire. At the time, HP published the steps to follow to check if your laptop’s battery was affected by the recall.

Recently, HP extended the recall and called on users to check their batteries again, even if they have been deleted in the past.

Only this time, instead of entering a serial number on a website, HP has published a tool that checks if your battery is recalled and needs to be replaced.

The recall extension now includes approximately 78,500 additional batteries used in commercial laptops and mobile workstations that have been sold to companies and other organizations. These batteries will be recalled in addition to the 50,000 laptop batteries already recalled by HP.

HP notebook owners who are concerned about whether their notebook batteries are affected by the recall are invited by HP and CPSC to visit the HP Battery Recall and Replacement Program website for additional instructions on how to test your battery and activate the battery safety mode if your battery is affected. (The battery security mode essentially allows you to use your laptop without depending on the battery to power it.)

Those whose laptops are affected should not try to replace the battery themselves, as HP says they need the services of an authorized technician. HP will provide these services “free of charge”.
