Before you begin, you should know how the Application Installation Control function works. Often, users try to install third-party software from unknown or unreliable sources and end up becoming ransom victims. To avoid this and other problems, Microsoft has integrated this function. If you enable this feature, not all users who have access to your computer will be able to install third-party applications and will receive an error message instead. You can only install applications from Windows Store, which is probably the most secure place to get applications.
To enable this feature, go to Settings > Apps > Apps & Features.
On the right side you will find an option called Install Apps. By default, it should be set to Allow applications from anywhere.
You see two additional options –
-
-
- Notify me before installing applications outside the store
- Allow only store applications.
-
Select Allow only store applications if you want to prevent any other programs from being installed by a user on your computer.
If you Notify me before installing applications from outside the store in the settings each time you install an application from outside the Windows store, you will see two buttons – Apps from Store and Install anyway.
In other words, you can install third-party applications, but you must confirm this before installation. If you selected Allow only store applications at the same time, you will see the following window with a message – Your PC settings only allow verified store applications to be installed.
When you click the Open Settings link, you will open the Apps & Features settings in the Settings panel.
For your information, this function does not work with a portable application. This means that if someone tries to install software, then only the error messages would appear.
Note that you must enable this feature in each account if you want the same prevention in all accounts you have on your computer.
