However, this process takes valuable system resources, so those of us who don’t need it can simply shut it down. Let’s take a closer look and examine wmpnetwk.exe to decide if you need it or if it’s just a waste of resources.

This is a component of Windows Media Player that is used to share media libraries. It is located in the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\ folder.

In this key, you will probably find a MOT DWORD called DisableDiscovery, otherwise, you can create it. All you have to do is set the DWORD value to 1 and you are ready to go.

Prevent wmpnetwk.exe from starting automatically (at startup).

This update includes stopping the service and changing the start type to Manual. After a restart, the start becomes automatic again. This prevents wmpnetwk.exe from working on its own. Instead, it is only accessible when needed (when you stream something in Windows Media Player). Here’s what you have to do.

Note: If you are using Windows Media Sharing after applying this correction, wmpnetwk.exe will continue to behave normally. To prevent it from working, you must reapply the patch or use method 2 to disable it indefinitely.

Uninstall Windows Media Player.

Users who never use WMP can also uninstall Windows Media Player to eliminate the waste of system resources caused by wmpnetwk.exe. However, users cannot uninstall Windows Media Player in the same way as they uninstall third-party software. Use the following instructions to disable WMP.

  1. Open the Run accessory.
  2. Type’appwiz.cpl’ in the Run text box and press OK. This opens the Programs and Features applet at the bottom of the Control Panel.

All problems that cause this problem are usually due to firewall or home group permissions. Although Windows Media Player is by far not the best media player on the market, it does fix some things. If you cannot do this, check the firewalls of both computers and make sure you can share other types of files within your home group before restarting the installation.
