Some users reported on RuneScape “There was an error when downloading the game configuration from the website”. RuneScape, also known as RuneScape 3, is a multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Jagex. Recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest and most updated free MMORPG in the world, this game has been extremely popular since its launch.
However, some gamers complained that when trying to run the RuneScape client, they received an error message saying that there was an error when downloading the game configuration from the website. In fact, the problem is common in Windows 10 / 8.1 / 7, and there can be many reasons.
If you encounter the same problem, you can follow the solutions below one by one to solve it.
Disable or Remove Third Party Antivirus
If you actively use a third party package as the default security package, a false positive may cause you to be disconnected from the game server. In this case you can solve the problem by disabling the protection in real time or by completely removing the package.
Just start by disabling the real-time protection of the third-party package you are actively using with the icon on the taskbar.
Note that this process will vary depending on the third party tool you are using. In most cases, however, you can do so by right-clicking the icon in the taskbar.
If you have disabled real-time protection, restart the game and see if the same error “There was an error when downloading the configuration of the game from the website” still appears.

Perform a complete Winsock Reset
If none of the above methods have helped you, you may have a problem with your network card. Some RuneScape players, who also encountered a “Error downloading the game configuration from the website” error, reported that in their case the problem was related to cached data on the NIC.
If this is the case, you can completely solve the problem by performing a full Winsock reset from the command line with elevated privileges. This will remove all temporary files related to the network card.
Here is a step by step guide to perform a complete Winsock Reset:
- Open the “Run” dialog by pressing the Windows + R keys. Then type “cmd” and press Enter to open a command line terminal with elevated privileges. When you see a request for User Account Management (UAC), click Yes to grant administrator rights.
- At the CMD command line with elevated privileges, type the following commands and press Enter after each command to clear Winsock, dependencies and the associated directory:
- Reset Netsh Winsock
- Netsh Winsock Reset Directory
- netsh int ipv4 reset
- After successfully processing each command, restart the computer and start the game as soon as the next boot is complete to see if the problem is solved.
Resolve through the firewall
- Press Windows + R to open the Run window, type Control Firewall.cpl, and press Enter.
- Click “Allow application or feature through Windows Firewall Protector” and click “Change settings”.
- Confirm all emerging requests and scroll through the list.
