Error 0x80240061 occurs when Windows 10 users attempt to update the Intel Management Engine Interface driver via the Windows Update component. If this update fails, Windows will try the process again later, often with the same final results.

The Intel Management Engine interface, commonly known as IMEI, is an integrated driver that allows communication between the IME firmware and the device’s operating system. The drivers enable certain functions of the motherboard and allow the hardware to operate properly. However, sometimes drivers are unable to do their job, making the computer almost unusable.

To perform Windows Update troubleshooting

Before trying other repair strategies, you should check if your version of Windows is not able to solve the problem automatically. Several concerned users who also had difficulty correcting the 0x80240061 error confirmed that the problem had disappeared after the Windows Update troubleshooting run.

It turns out that this patch is effective in situations where your WU components are constantly trying to install a driver that is actually incompatible (which is why the installation fails). If this scenario applies, you should be able to solve the problem by running Windows Update Troubleshooting, which removes the waiting queue so that the utility does not display the same error in the future.

Update of drivers

Drivers for the Intel Management Engine interface could be the reason why the software is being built. The drivers may be obsolete or recently updated drivers may no longer work.

Step 1: Type Device Manager on the search icon in your taskbar and click on it.
Step 2: Expand the System Devices option.
Step 3: Locate and click on the Intel Management Engine Interface option and a pop-up window will appear.
Step 4: In the Driver tab, click Update Driver and be patient when it is updated. Then close the window and restart your computer.

Removing and manually reinstalling drivers

If updating the drivers is not the right solution for you, it is better to remove these drivers from your PC and reinstall them manually. This should solve incompatibility problems as well as other similar problems such as internal corrupted files. Here’s what you need to keep in mind:

  • Access the Device Manager as usual.
  • Expand System Devices and right-click on the Intel Management Engine interface.
  • Select’Uninstall’ and wait until the deletion is complete. You can also access the Control Panel to uninstall any other associated programs or files.
  • When you are finished, visit your manufacturer’s official website and download the Intel Management Engine interface drivers.
  • Run the executable and follow the on-screen instructions to install the drivers.
  • That should be it.

Update the BIOS

If the troubleshooting steps above do not solve the problems with the Intel Management Engine interface driver, you should try to update the BIOS. Depending on your manufacturer and motherboard, you can now perform the update process automatically via the BIOS interface.

Otherwise, you will need to download the BIOS update patches from your manufacturer’s official website. Let’s hope that this last solution is also the method that fixes IMEI bugs.
