How to disable Edge InPrivate private browsing mode using the registry or group policy

Checking the web cache stored on the user’s computer can reveal the user’s browsing activity, and Microsoft Edge, like other browsers, therefore provides the private browsing mode Edge InPrivate Browsing focused on data protection. However, if you do not find this feature useful, or if you want to disable it on your corporate network for any reason, we will show you how to disable Edge InPrivate Browsing Mode using Windows Registry or Group Policy Editor.

Private navigation is offered for a specific purpose. It ensures that all your web searches and online history will not be visible to you or others the next time you log in. InPrivate Browsing prevents the Edge browser from saving data about your browsing session. This includes cookies, temporary Internet files, history and other data. Toolbars and extensions are disabled by default. For more information, see Help.

To disable private browsing, simply close this browser window. To permanently disable private browsing, you must use REGEDIT or GPDEIT>.

Using the registry editor

To disable this function, run regedit to open the registry editor and navigate to the next path :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoft

Right-click the Microsoft button, click New and select button. Name this new MicrosoftEdge key.

Right-click MicrosoftEdge, click New, then click Key to create a subfolder and name it Main.

Select Main and right-click in an empty field on the right side. Then click New > DWORD (32-bit) value and name it as AllowInPrivate.

Finally, double-click AllowInPrivate and make sure its value is set to 0 (zero). This disables InPrivate mode in the Edge browser.

The following values are supported :

  • 0 – Not permitted.
  • 1 (default) – Allowed.

When you restart your computer, you will notice that the New InPrivate window option is grayed out.

Using the Edge InPrivate Browsing mode via the Group Policy method, you can also disable the Edge InPrivate Browsing mode by running gpedit.msc to open the Edge Group Policy Editor.

Navigate to next setting :

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Edge

Double-click Allow InPrivate Surfing and set to Disabled.

This policy setting allows you to decide whether employees can browse the InPrivate website. If you enable or disable this setting, employees can use the InPrivate website. If you disable this setting, employees will not be able to use the InPrivate website.

Click Apply and complete the process.
