Copying text from open windows with GetWindowText

Often we have to copy error messages, error codes or other texts from images, dialog boxes or open windows that otherwise cannot be copied. Although you can still write the text manually, this can be a problem if the text is too long.

If you use Microsoft Office, you can use the built-in Microsoft Office Document Imaging tool to extract text from tiff and mdi files. We have already seen free tools to copy text from images like OCR and Gttext.

GetWindowText is a very small portable program for reading and copying text in open windows.

If you have a program folder or window open and need to copy the text inside, you can easily do so with this tool. Simply left click the GetWindowText icon on the left side and hold down the left mouse button to start playback.

Then simply move the mouse over the window from which the text is to be read and copied. When you release the mouse button, playback is complete. The text appears in the text box, which you can then copy.
