Capture2Text is a free software for Windows that allows you to extract, copy and paste text from images into the clipboard. It is very easy to oCR part of the screen and automatically copy the text from an image into the clipboard. To save the desired part, press the standard keyboard combination (WinKey + Q) and select the part. In addition to text recognition and conversion, it also supports translation into other languages using Google Translate. It supports nearly 100 languages and can recognize any text written in these languages. However, it comes with the following languages as standard: English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish.

Using Capture2Text

Capture2Text is as easy as falling from a logbook. All you have to do is download the compressed zip file, then decompress the contents into your local storage. Double-click Capture2Text.exe and it should greet you with the following image if you are running it on your computer for the first time.

Since this is a tool based on keyboard shortcuts, you do not need a special user interface to start it. It will be hidden under the Quick Start toolbar in the taskbar. From there, you can start the settings and adjust other options.

Follow these steps to convert any part of the screen to text:

1 After running the Capture2Text executable, the default keyboard shortcut (WinKey + Q) is enabled. You can then position the cursor on the upper left position of the part to be selected.

2 Press the key combination and start selecting the desired screen area by moving the mouse pointer over the text you want to use for optical character recognition. You can even move the blue field through the screen window by right-clicking and dragging the subfield over the desired text.

3 To complete the portion selection, press the Enter key or simply press the left mouse button. The text in the selected section is recognized and a pop-up window appears displaying the captured text as it is copied to the clipboard.

The free tool also offers several other options for OCR capture (text line OCR capture, text line OCR capture, text line OCR capture, bubble OCR capture, etc) that automatically captures a text line depending on the hotkey operation you select.

Adjust settings

You can change the active OCR language and make other settings on the Capture2Text Settings page. Go to Quick Access Toolbar and right-click the program icon.

You can enable/disable options to save text to the clipboard or display the pop-up window. To change the active OCR language, select the desired entry from the OCR Language menu. You can also tighten the text alignment settings to keep them strictly horizontal/vertical.

For more options, you can click Settings to open the Settings window. You will find below some of the many options available here:

  • Change the key combinations assigned to different OCR capture schemes.
  • Adjust the background, frame, and text color settings relative to the shooting area and preview window.
