you get this error message when you click desktop shortcuts, Internet links, opening Word or Excel documents, and so on.

Many of the time settings Internet Explorer as default web browser fixes the problem.

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Go to Tools and click Internet Options
  • Then click Programs Tab
  • Then click Make Default

If this does not solve your problem, we may need to reset the IE settings.

It is also reported that this error occurs when we try to open Excel or Word documents.

To solve this problem, we must change the Dynamic Data Exchange or DDE settings. However, create a system restore point before continuing.

In Excel 2010 :

  • Open Excel go to File and click Options
  • Then click Next
  • Disable Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE).
  • Then restart Excel (or Word).

Let’s hope it helps!

Microsoft also released Fix It solutions to solve this problem:

        • Windows 8 users can download Microsoft Fix it 20074.
        • Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003 users can download Microsoft Fix it 50392.
        • If you receive this error message while using Microsoft Excel, use Microsoft Fix It KB21149 and setting Ignore other applications using Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) is disabled.

If they do not help, then our author Kapil Arya has another suggestion:

Windows offers several methods of data transfer between applications, The Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) protocol is one of them. The DDE protocol is a set of messages and policies. It sends messages between applications that share data and uses shared memory to exchange data between applications. Microsoft’s productivity suite components, i.e. Office uses the DDE protocol.

If disabling DDE from the user interface does not work, try the following method with the Windows registry.

1 Press Windows + R combination, type Regedt32.exe into the Run dialog box and press Enter to open Registry Editor.

2 Navigate here:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTExcel.12shellOpenddeexec

3 In the left pane, export the key by selecting it and clicking File -> Export. After exporting, right-click the same button and select Delete :

After deleting the key, you can close the registry editor (16). You would not receive the error after a restart.

If you have this problem when you click a program shortcut, you must delete the old shortcut and create a new one instead. We know that it works several times.
