Windows 8 includes two new options to restore your PC to its original state: the’Basic Refresh’ function and the’Full Reset’ function. Refreshing your PC offers you an easy way to restart while preserving all your documents, accounts, personal settings and even Metro applications you downloaded from the Windows store.
When you upgrade a Windows 8 computer, Metro applications are restored by default, but desktop applications or software are not. If you wish, you can create a custom system image that includes your applications or desktop software. Reinstalling the entire desktop software can be boring and time consuming. If you use this custom system image, Refresh Your PC will also include all your desktop software.

To create a custom system image in Windows 8, first create a destination folder to save the custom system image. I installed my Windows 8 on drive C, so I want to create the custom system image on drive D in a new folder called MySystemImage. So the folder I created has the path: D:MySystemImage.
Now move the cursor to the lower left corner to open the Win+X menu and click Command Prompt (Admin) to open a high CMD.
To create a custom system image, we use the Recimg.exe command line tool included in Windows 8. Recimg.exe creates an image that can be used by the Refresh function when restoring Windows 8.
In the CMD window, type recimg -CreateImage D:MySystemImage and press Enter.
Recimg starts taking a snapshot and writing the image as wim archive in the specified folder. It should take some time for you to continue working on your computer, or leave it on and go and let it do its job.
This allows you to create a custom system image for Windows 8. I strongly recommend that you create one once you have all your Metro applications and desktop software installed on your new Windows 8 installation.
