This is an exciting time for Windows enthusiasts around the world, with the release of Windows 10 Technical Preview, and I’m sure most of them are getting ready for a road test. So, in this post, I will suggest some tips for a smooth installation of Windows 10 and some tips for post installation.

First of all Windows 10 is always a technical preview, which means it is an immature operating system – so we expect to see bugs or problems. The purpose of a technical preview is to allow device drivers and software developers to start working on an updated version of their product when the operating system meets RTM. However, it doesn’t hurt to install Windows 10 and go for a walk.

The first thing is that I strongly recommend not installing Windows 10 Technical Preview on a production environment , since most software is not officially tested or released for installation on Windows 10, so you have less chance of getting support through the official channel. It is best installed on a test environment or on one of the virtual machines, for example with a Hyper-V or VMWare or any other visualization software available or your laptop/personal desktop or in a double boot.

First check the system requirements to make sure everything is compatible. These are the same as for Windows 8.1, which basically means :

  1. Processor: 1 GHz or faster
  2. RAM : 1 GB (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
  3. Free hard disk space : 16 GB
  4. Graphics card : Microsoft DirectX 9 Graphics Card with WDDM driver
  5. A Microsoft account and Internet access

If you are planning an Upgrade, your current operating system supports an upgrade from Windows 7 (including Windows 7 SP1), Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. Currently, you can switch from English, Chinese (simplified) or Brazilian (Portuguese).

If you are planning an update, it is a good idea to update update your operating system to update all patches. It is also a good idea to update the entire driver software. Disable your security software because it sometimes causes problems when updating your operating system. Remember to back up your files and software to an external drive or the cloud to be safe.

Most tips should help you start installing Windows 10 without major problems.

N ow I will suggest some tips after installation. Every time you install a new operating system, the biggest challenge is finding the right drivers and software. Fortunately, Microsoft has made it easier by adding the Compatibility Assistant, and most programs that run on Windows 8 should run on Windows 10. So before installing stable drivers for display, chipset, sound, network, etc., go to their website and look for beta drivers, because since the release of this technical preview, they must already have started working on the drivers to make them compatible with Windows 10. Also try to install only the drivers – that is, most drivers are installed with additional software or toolkits. Avoid them until you have a stable version that supports Windows 10. Now, when it comes to software, try installing it normally first, if it fails or behaves badly (which is unlikely if it works well under Windows 8.1), then uninstall it and try installing it in compatibility mode and see if it works.

If you experience instability after installing the software and drivers, it is probably the software or driver that behaves badly, not the operating system itself. For example, random accidents, freezing, etc.. You must therefore isolate the problem by consulting the Event Viewer or Windows error logs, and so on. If you still have problems, you can post your problem at any time in our comments area or in our forum for help.

I hope you find these tips useful. I know that some of them apply to all scenarios, but I will only repeat them once more so that you do not miss any steps and the experience is as smooth as possible. Most of the advice comes from my personal experience, there are no written documents to support this contribution.
