How to remove advertisements in Skype desktop app
Skype is the most popular video calling and Instant Messaging service which was bought by Microsoft in 2011. Before acquisition by Microsoft its interface remained relatively free from frills and doesn’t have any advertising pushes which the latest desktop application have. Actually most of the Microsoft application which comes for free will come filled with advertisements. This is the reason most of the users choose to use the older version by disabling the automatic updates to do so.
The problem with the older version is compatibility issues and constant pestering for the latest updates. If you are using the latest version of Skype desktop app and you want to get rid of the bothersome advertisements and you want the interface to be cleaner to navigate then this tutorial will help you.

- Go to start menu and type Internet Options and press Enter key. This will open Internet Options window, here click on Security tab and then select Restricted sites and then click on the sites button which opens the list of websites which you have blocked.
- Here add the URLs apps.skype.com and g.msn.com to the list of restricted sites and then exit from here.
That’s it, from now advertisements doesn’t appear on your Skype desktop client, but the placeholder will remain at the top of the chat window until you disable this.
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the paste the following in the address bar
C:Users[Your Windows Username Here]AppDataRoamingSkype
Here click on the folder with your Skype ID and right click on config.xml and open this file in the Notepad. Press Ctrl+F keys and paste AdvertPlaceHolder in the search box.
Now replace <AdvertPlaceholder>1</AdvertPlaceholder> with <AdvertPlaceholder>0</AdvertPlaceholder> and restart the Skype desktop client. No you will get the more compact interface without any advertisements.
Fix the contacts view
- Click on View tab on your taskbar and select Compact sidebar view option. This will saves lot of screen space giving more information on top of it.
- Here from the options go to IM and SMS > IM appearance, here you will find the checkbox for compact chat view and then click on save.
Compact chat view looks similar to the Compact sidebar view and the shrinking avatars and compressing all the text closer together. So you can see more of your conversations without bubbling the graphics taking up quite as much and offering three more lines of text in the typical usage cases.
