How to record games in Windows 10 with Game DVR

Windows 10  has introduced lot of new features that are previously unseen in the Windows OS before. Built-in game recording is one of the best feature in Windows 10. Let us see here how to use the GameDVR feature in Windows 10. GameDVR works similar way to the feature on Xbox One. On Xbox console you double tap on the Xbox button which will bring up an overlay which also allow you to press X button to record last 30 seconds of gameplay.

How to record games in Windows 10 with Game DVR

  • In any game screen, press the Win+G key to bring up the game bar, which is similar to the Snipping tool overlay which provides few controls for recording the games. It doesn’t matter whether it is a steam game, a classic Windows game or something i.e new from Windows Store.
  • However the game will be playing in background,  so you may want pause the game. Press Red button to start recording. A timer will start and after few seconds you will see the Red color timer at top right corner of the screen.
  • To stop the recording, press Win+G keys again and tap or click on the red square button. Now a message will confirm that the clip has been recorded and this will be automatically saved in the user account’s video folder.
  • Use Win+Alt+R shortcuts to start and stop the recordings without need to bring up the game bar and just click on it. This is how you can easily record the clips when you are in middle of the game.
  • You will find that one of the icon on the game bar will be greyed out. Tap on it and it will automatically saves the last 30 seconds of the gameplay. The same procedure can followed on Xbox One, just launch Xbox app and click on the Settings icon at bottom of left hand menu. Type Xbox in the Windows 10’s search box in the taskbar and the app will be launched. There will be lots of settings, you can customize them according to your own.
  • Scroll down the list of options until you find the Record in background while I am playing a game option. Once the option is enabled, GameDVR icon will pop up in game bar. Alternatively you can also use Win+Alt+G keys to save the last 30 seconds.
  • To review the screenshots and video recordings in the Xbox app, just click on Game DVR icon in the left side menu. You will find three sections: On this PC, shared and community.
  • Below the playback controls you will find Trim link, click on this and the Blue marker will appear. Now drag the position where you want the video to start and end. Click on Trim original or save copy.
