How to delete Search box and taskview icon from Windows 10 taskbar

If you have installed the latest Windows 10 Technical Preview, then you might be aware of the newly added Search and Task View icons to the Windows 10 Taskbar. Most of the users are felt annoyed of this unnecessary icons on the taskbar, because they can be accessed through shortcuts. Unfortunately these icons cannnot be removed as there is no built-in option to remove these buttons from the taskbar. You can even reorder as they are just stuck next to the Start Menu on the Windows taskbar.

These two icons occupies lot of space on the taskbar and are useless. Microsoft hasn’t given any official procedures to remove these two icons, but you can do it using the Registry tweaks. This can be done in two ways, let us see in this tutorial how to remove them.

How to delete Search box and taskview icon from Windows 10 taskbar

Method 1: Using Taskbar context menu

  • First right-click on the taskbar on your Windows and this will display the options where you can choose to show or hide the search box and task view buttons in the taskbar.
  • Here just uncheck the option which you desire and this removes the search box or the taskview buttons in the taskbar.

Method 2: Using registry editor

You can delete the search box, search icon and task view icons from the Windows 10 taskbar using the registry editor.

2a. Remove search icon

  • Launch the RUN on Windows and type regedit and then hit Enter and this will open registry editor.
  • Enter the following key in the registry editor.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSearch
  • Search for DWORD SearchboxTaskbarMode in the right side pane and change its value to 0.
  • Now restart the PC for the effects to take place.

If you want to restore search icon again in future, then simply restore the value to 1. That’s it, the search icon will be restored.

2b. Remove task view icon

  • Launch the RUN on Windows and type regedit and then hit Enter and this will open registry editor.
  • Enter the following key in the registry editor.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced
  • Search for DWORD ShowTaskViewButton in the right side pane and change its value to 0.
  • Now restart the PC for the effects to take place.

If you want the TaskViewButton to appear on the taskbar in future simply change the above value to 1, then it will be restored.

2c. Restrict and remove task view icon

  • Launch the RUN on Windows and type regedit and then hit Enter and this will open registry editor.
  • Enter the following key in the registry editor.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer
  • Now create the new key under Explorer key and name it as MultiTaskingView.
  • Create another key under MultiTaskingView and name it as AllUpView.
  • Final key path will appear like this.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerMultitaskingViewAllUpView
  • In the right side pane, select AllUpView key and create new DWORD Enabled and make it value as 0.
  • Restart the PC for the changes to take effect.

If you want to restore the icon, then simply change the value of DWORD Enabled to value 1.
