Microsoft has released a new update for Windows 7 SP1 that adds a new option to the built-in Disk Cleanup Tool , allowing users to clean and delete obsolete Windows updates.

To get this update, you can download it from the links at the end of this article or install it via your Windows Update. After installing this update, you will see a new Windows Update Cleanup option in the Disk Cleanup Tool to remove Windows updates that you no longer need.

The ‘Clean Windows Updates’ option is only available if the Disk Cleanup Wizard detects Windows updates that you do not need on your computer.

To allow you to return to previous updates, updates are stored in the WinSxS folder, even if they are replaced by subsequent updates. Therefore, you may not be able to return to a replaced update after running the Disk Cleanup tool. If you want to return to a replaced update that deletes the Disk Cleanup tool, you can install the update manually.
