Those of you who are considering upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP should read this article because it talks about available upgrade paths – what you can and cannot do.
Windows 8.1 upgrades are available on the Windows store and on an installation media. However, installation media is not available for Windows RT 8.1 upgrades. You must use the Windows store. Again, the volume license versions of Windows 8, Windows 8 Enterprise and Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation cannot be updated from the Windows store. You must use the media to update these editions, says Microsoft.

- You can upgrade Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 Pro with Media Center to Windows 8.1 Pro while retaining your Windows settings, personal files and applications.
- You can upgrade to Windows 8.1 Enterprise (volume license) from Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, Windows 8 Enterprise and Windows 8.1 Pro.
Note that you will not be able to perform one installation or update in multiple languages and maintain your Windows settings, personal files or applications. You can only keep your personal files intact.
