The system partition is essential if you want to use the encryption of the BitLocker drive, which cannot work otherwise. Important boot files are also stored here by default, although you can store them on the main Windows partition if you wish.

When you install Windows 10 on a properly formatted hard disk, it first creates a partition on the hard disk at the beginning of the hard disk. This partition is called the system partition. Then, the unallocated disk space is used to create your system drive and install the operating system.

If you open the Computer folder, you will not see the system partition because no drive letter is assigned to it. You only see the system drive or drive C. To see the partition reserved for the system, you must open Disk Management.

How is System Reserved Partition Created

The system partition is created during the Windows operating system reinstallation process when you partition the computer’s hard disk. It starts with Windows 7 and uses 100 MB of disk space and continues to be used under Windows 8 and Windows 10, but requires more disk space, or 350 MB. The reserved partition of the Windows system contains the Windows boot manager and boot configuration data, so it is very associated with booting Windows from your system disk.

When you start your computer, the Windows Boot Manager starts reading the files on the partition to load Windows. Once the partition is created, you can no longer delete it easily. If you need to reduce the number of primary partitions, the system partition should be your last choice for deletion. Removing this partition requires very complicated operations, which are not confirmed by Microsoft. It is therefore recommended to leave it when it is created, as it takes up very little space. The best way to get rid of this partition is to prevent it from being generated.

How to Prevent System Reserved Partition

During Windows Setup

  • When you start in Windows Setup, you are prompted to create a primary partition for the system files.
  • Once you have created a new partition for your Windows installation, System Reserved Partition is automatically created
  • Select the main partition, click Remove, then click OK to confirm the pop-up window.
  • Select the partition reserved for the system and click on the Extend button. You can now extend this partition by giving it all the unallocated space.
  • Click on the last format, then select this partition to install Windows.

During Windows Installation

  1. Press Shift+F10 during Windows installation to open a command prompt window.
  2. Type diskpart in the Command Prompt window and press Enter.
  3. Create a new partition in an unallocated space using the diskpart tool. If you have only one drive in your computer and it is completely empty, you can simply select disk 0, then create a primary partition to select the first hard disk and create a new partition with the total amount of unallocated space on the drive.
  4. Continue the installation process. When prompted to create a partition, select the partition you created previously.
