Wake-on-LAN is a protocol to wake remote computers from a low power mode. When a network adapter detects an Ethernet packet or WOL event, Wake-On-LAN (WOL) wakes a Windows computer from sleep mode. In Windows 10/8, Microsoft has changed the default behavior of how your computer reacts to WOL events.

Wake-on-LAN is not officially supported by the S5 power state in Windows 7. On Windows 7, when the PC turns off, the system is set to S5 and all devices to D3, the state with the lowest performance.

On Windows 10/8, when the computer turns off, the system can be set to S4 Hybrid Shutdown or Hibernate and the devices can be set to D3. Wake-On-LAN is supported by S3 (Sleep) or S4 (Hibernate) under Windows 10/8.
