Before you start, make sure you have all the latest Windows updates installed on your device. If you receive messages such as This USB port does not support DisplayPort or Thunderbolt or MHL or The USB device may have limited functionality when connected to this port, use another USB port. If it doesn’t help, keep going.
1] If the USB device to which your Windows 10 PC (or phone) is connected encounters a problem or problem with the device driver, open the Device Manager and locate the unknown device that is causing the problem by looking for a yellow exclamation marked with the device icon. Then simply select the device, click Properties and check the status displayed under Device Status.
If an error code is displayed, check the Device Manager error code and use it to resolve the problem.
2] Another probable reason that USB-C does not work under Windows 10 might be an insufficient PC charge . This may happen if
- The charger is not compatible with your PC.
- The charger is not powerful enough to charge your PC.
- The charger is not connected to a charging port on your PC.
- The charging cable does not match the power requirements of the PC charger.
To correct this, always use the supplied charger and cable and make sure you connect your charger to your PC’s USB-C charging port. Also try cleaning the USB-C port on your PC with a compressed air can.
3] The functionality of the device USB or Thunderbolt may be limited. It is very likely that the connected device or dongle has new features for USB-C that your PC (or phone) does not support, or that the connected device or dongle is not connected to the correct USB-C port on your PC.
For an alternative mode to work properly, the PC hardware and software and the connected device or dongle must support the alternative mode. Some alternative modes may also require a special USB-C cable. Make sure the device or dongle is connected to the USB-C port on your PC, which supports the correct alternative mode. For example, if you are connecting a device in Thunderbolt alternative mode, make sure it is connected to the USB C port on your PC that supports Thunderbolt.
Also ensure that your PC and cable support the same USB-C functions as the connected device.
4] The DisplayPort/MHL connection may fail. As you know, the DisplayPort alternative mode allows you to project videos and other visual content and play back sound on an external display that supports DisplayPort. There are also other modes, such as alternative modes. These include
-
-
- MHL – MHL alternative mode allows you to project videos and play audio on an external screen that supports MHL.
- HDMI – Alternative HDMI mode allows you to project video and play audio on an external display that supports HDMI.
-
To solve problems caused by this problem, make sure that your PC, external monitor and cable support alternative DisplayPort or MHL modes and that the device or dongle is connected directly to your PC.
5] Perform hardware and device troubleshooting or Windows USB troubleshooting and see if it helps. These Troubleshooters check the hardware or USB connected to your computer for known problems and automatically fix them.
There are other MSDN suggestions if you need them.
