We generally use the Windows Store application on our Windows 8 computers to update our Windows Store applications. However, you may want to update the applications and your system may not have an Internet connection. For such scenarios, Microsoft has released a collection of downloadable updates for Windows Store applications that are now available in the Windows Update Catalog.

The Microsoft Update Catalog is a Microsoft service that provides a list of software updates that can be distributed over an enterprise network. Using the Microsoft Update Catalog can be a single point of contact for finding Microsoft software updates, drivers and patches.

The idea behind these downloads is not to bypass the default route (Windows store), but to provide an alternative for machines that cannot connect to the Windows store while trying to update the Windows store applications.

This can only help you update applications already installed on the system and not reinstall applications. These updates can be distributed through System Center, WSUS and third-party equivalents, or integrated into your organization’s operating system image.

Windows Store applications delivered with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 editions are available as standard. Third-party Windows Store applications cannot be updated by this process. However, developers can provide the package, which can then be loaded laterally, like enterprise applications.

Microsoft recommends that users install application updates as part of their post-OS updates via WSUS. If, for any reason, a user needs an automated process, he can extract any of the.cab files into his respective MSI. You can then script installation or deployment using traditional application delivery technologies.

The packages listed in the table are available to users for installation via WSUS and the Windows Update Catalog and can be downloaded in the languages supported by the Windows Store. However, some editions such as Windows RT and Windows 8.1 RT would not support packages. These packages are not available with Windows Update.

It is important to note that packages cannot use.exe to install offline updates. They must be installed on a running operating system via the MSI installer KB2971128
