Method 1: System File Checker (SFC)
The System File Checker is a built-in tool that can help you repair missing or corrupted system files which could be causing your data to be hidden.
- Open the Command Prompt as an administrator by typing “cmd” in the Start menu, right-clicking on Command Prompt, and selecting “Run as administrator”.
- In the Command Prompt, type
sfc /scannow
and press Enter. - Wait for the process to complete and then check if your missing data has been recovered.

Creating a new user account can sometimes help in fixing user-specific problems.
- Go to the Settings app and click on “Accounts”.
- Select “Other accounts” and then “Add an account”.

Method 3: Using Reagentc Command
Use the reagentc command if your PC needs an image to refresh or reset.
- Insert your Windows 8 installation media and locate the install.wim file.
- Create a new folder at the root of your C: drive named WinRec, and copy install.wim to this folder.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Type
reagentc.exe /setosimage /path C:\WinRec /target c:\Windows /Index 1
and press Enter. - Attempt to refresh or reset your PC again.
Method 4: Use Data Recovery Software
If you cannot locate your missing files, you might need to turn to third-party data recovery software.
- Download and install a reliable data recovery tool like MiniTool Power Data Recovery or Remo File Recovery software.
- Launch the tool and select the disk to scan.
- Scan for lost data and recover the files once found.
Method 5: Restore from Backup
If you had the foresight to backup your data before the upgrade, restoring it should be straightforward.
- Go to the Control Panel, select “System and Security”, then “Backup and Restore (Windows 7)”.
- Follow the prompts to restore your files from a backup.
Method 6: Recover from Windows.old Folder
After an upgrade, the old version of Windows is stored in a folder named Windows.old.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to the C: drive.
- Locate the “Windows.old” folder and search for your files.
- Copy them to your current user folder.
Method 7: Enable Windows Administrator Account
Accessing files from an active administrator account can sometimes help in their recovery.
- Open Computer Management (Right-click on “This PC” > Manage), go to “Local Users and Groups”, then “Users”.
- Right-click on the Administrator account and select “Properties”.
- Uncheck “Account is disabled” and apply the changes.
- Log in to the Administrator account to access all files on the computer.
Remember Regular Backups
To prevent future instances of missing data, make it a habit to back up your files regularly. Data loss can be a stressful experience, but with backups, you’ll ensure that your important files are always safe.
Keep Your System Updated
Staying up-to-date with Windows updates is another essential practice for both security and system performance. Updates can prevent issues like data loss from happening in the first place.
Recovering missing data can be challenging, but with these steps, you now have multiple strategies at your disposal. Hopefully, one of these methods will help you get back your lost files so you can enjoy the new features of Windows 8 without any setbacks.
