Windows users may sometimes encounter an unexpected error when trying to access shared resources. When they attempt to access a shared folder, they receive the following error message: The specified network name is no longer available.
Imagine a hypothetical case where a network of computers in an office is connected under the same local Windows domain. One of the systems connected to the printer is used to print documents and has worked properly until one day users report that they cannot access the shared folder used to send documents for printing. While the shared folder is visible to the PC connected to the printer, it transmits the mentioned error to the users of the connected systems.
The specified network name is no longer available
October 2024 Update:
You can now prevent PC problems by using this tool, such as protecting you against file loss and malware. Additionally, it is a great way to optimize your computer for maximum performance. The program fixes common errors that might occur on Windows systems with ease - no need for hours of troubleshooting when you have the perfect solution at your fingertips:
- Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (Windows 10, 8, 7, XP, Vista – Microsoft Gold Certified).
- Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
- Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.
Try the following solutions individually and see if they help you solve your problem:
1] Disable Symantec Endpoint Protection
A known case of this problem is the failure of Symantec Endpoint Protection. So if you have it installed on your system, turn it off and check.
- Right-click the Start button and select Prompt (Administrator) and type the command smc -stop.
- Press Enter to partially stop Symantec Endpoint Protection. Check if this solves the problem. Otherwise, try the smc -disable -ntp and then smc -disable -ntp -p commands. The second command disables the firewall.
- To later activate Symantec Endpoint Protection type smc -start and firewall type smc -disable -ntp.
2] Temporarily disables user account control
To isolate the problem, disable user account control. It’s not recommended by Microsoft, so we should turn around as soon as we realize the problem.
3] Turn off your antivirus software
Temporarily turn off your antivirus software and check if users can access shared folders later. Activate the software as soon as this case is isolated.
4] Grant permissions for the shared folder
-
- Right-click the folder and select Properties from the options.
- In the Security tab, select Advanced and go to the list of owners in the Advanced menu.
- Checking and changing permissions as desired
Ideally, this should have been the first step in file access problems, but because of the error message, it is probably a firewall or terminal protection problem.
5] Enable SMBv1, SMBv2 & SMBv3 on problem system
If the problem is specific to one or a few systems, we might consider enabling SMBv1, SMBv2 and SMBv3 on problem systems.
I hope something will help you here.
