The Microsoft Management Console (MMC) represented by process mmc.exe handles administrative snap-ins for Windows. If one of the affected snap-ins such as Device Manager, Group Policy Editor, Disk Management, etc. fails, it is quite possible that the MMC is responsible. In such a situation, an error dialog box may appear saying:

Microsoft Management Console no longer works

Such crashes may refer to incompatible application DLLs attached to the process mmc.exe.

The first step when this error occurs should be a system reboot. There’s a chance it could help. Try updating Windows and rebooting the system if it helps. If this is not the case, we can continue with the following troubleshooting steps :

1] Start Windows 10 in clean boot mode

Assuming you have recently installed software and suspect it is causing a problem, try uninstalling it and rebooting the system. If this does not solve the problem, you can perform a clean boot and try to identify the offensive program that might not open the MMC.

When you start the computer in a clean boot process, the computer starts with a preselected minimum set of drivers and boot programs, and because the computer starts with a minimum set of drivers, some programs may not work as expected. Clean boot debugging is designed to isolate a performance problem. To troubleshoot the clean boot, you must perform a series of actions and restart the computer after each action. You may need to manually disable one item at a time to try to locate the one that is causing the problem. Once you have identified the offender, you can remove or disable them.

2] Run System File Checker

The error is associated with the mmc.exe process and may occur if the DLLs associated with the process are corrupted or incompatible. Try System File Checker to repair corrupted DLLs and see if the problem is solved.

3] Use DISM

Ideally, System File Checker should be able to repair damaged and incompatible DLLs, but otherwise, run DISM to repair a potentially damaged system image.

4] Event observer error checking

Event observer error log displays system error log files for you to review and identify errors and messages :

  1. To open the Event Viewer, search for the program in the Windows search bar.
  2. If you find events marked as errors with a red exclamation mark, double-click the event to get the details of the problem and correct them accordingly.

Let’s hope something helps.
